Asteroid discoveries in SkyMorph archive

Searchers of the SkyMorph archive

In general there are two kind of users of SkyMorph image archive. At first they are professional astronomers, who search for precovery positions of their own discoveries. And there are amateur astronomers, who search for precovery positions of unusual objects, but mainly hunt for undiscovered asteroids.

Since the SkyMorph archive was launched there was a rule, which said that credit received the discoverer of asteroid in NEAT archive. In those times some amateur astronomers were a real hunters and they discovered hundreds of new asteroids. But after the rule changed, they lost their motivation to go on.

Summary of monthly discoveries from SkyMorph archive (644)

In the table below you can see mohtly number of new disoveries from NEAT/Palomar Observatory. There were not published Observation summary in several moths, e.g. in March 2009, September and October 2008 - it means that discoveries of those months are included in figures of next monthly Obs summary.

Nowadays there are only few dedicated hunters of uncatalogized asteroids in SkyMorph archive. You can see the summary of individuals total discoveries in the table below.


List of individual discoverers from SkyMorph archive

This data are based on individual statistics of each hunter. The discoveries numbers means all objects found in SkyMoprh archive images, which were sent to MPC and received provisional designations by individual observers.

The total of numbered asteroids from NEAT program (period 1995-2007) as for 2020 Aug 22: 41 631.

Because of change of credit rule there are also discoveries made from NEAT archive but credited to some individual observers. That is why this summary is could not meant to be an official and complete numbers of discoveries in NEAT archive.
